Hurry up, download some more RAM!

Does this mark the death of personal computing? The announcement that Micron is shutting down its Crucial consumer line for SSD and RAM didn't quite sit right with me. I mean, it makes sense... maximize profits, right? The decision is logical, but it does give us a look into what could be a dystopian future.

What if all other manufacturers start thinking in the same direction: You must satisfy the never ending thirst these AI companies seemingly have for compute. A large customer that buys in containers and not two-packs, has a shit ton of money and doesn't complain as long as the graphs keep trending upwards. You might as well just bend the knee and make some profit.

"But where will consumers get their hardware from?" you might be thinking. Well, we won't. Not good hardware anyways, and not at prices that makes sense. Because this is the rise of the AI and cloud compute era. Why buy your own hardware when you can just rent it, in the cloud? Just for a small subscription fee, of course.

Downloading more RAM might actually become a real thing. We already have services like GeForce NOW that allows you to play games over the internet, without having any of the hardware requirements on your local computer.

This shift away from consumers might just be the start of something bigger. And not necessarily better. Well, happy holidays I guess!
